A working studio space for visiting writers and artists to create, develop their craft and share their work through community programs, The Writer’s Room pays homage to the many ‘writing rooms’ that existed in pre-war hotels where guests recorded memories and linked to home.

Artists in Residence use a desk donated to The Betsy by the Hyam Plutzik Centennial Committee to commemorate the poet’s sojourn as a soldier in Florida during the 1940’s on his way to war. Born over 100 years ago, and a three-time Pulitzer Prize finalist before his death, Hyam Plutzik is the father of The Betsy Hotel owner, Jonathan Plutzik.

Since The Writer’s Room opened in 2012, more than 1000 working writers (and other creatives) have stayed at The Betsy and engaged in community service programs.

The Writer’s Room at The Betsy hosts professional artists in all disciplines (in the visual arts we host digital artists only) year round. While artists in all disciplines are encouraged to apply, The Betsy program has a sweet spot for poets. Residencies at The Betsy are typically Sunday through Wednesday.  In some circumstances, residencies can be a full week. There is no charge to stay in The Writer’s Room. In exchange for the opportunity, visiting writers are asked to donate a recent publication (if available) to one of The Betsy's libraries.
